While Cocone has long incorporated remote work for some of its engineering positions, it is now implementing an even more aggressive remote work system at Corona Disaster.
In addition, the interviews were conducted during the lifting of the state of emergency declaration at the end of 2020, so the working arrangements may differ from those in place at the time you are viewing them.
Normal times” in the text refers to times when a state of emergency has not been declared.

At Cocone, where 60% of our employees are women, we have long had a system in place for balancing work and child rearing. Of course, child rearing is not only the responsibility of women. KOKONE’s system provides an environment where men can also participate in child rearing.
In this issue, we spoke with three engineers who are raising their children to rave reviews.

Self-introduction by Papa’s engineers

First of all, please tell us about your background and your current work.

First of all, please tell us about your background and your current work.

Park:
After graduating from university, I worked at a SIer and then at a game company for about 6 years, mainly in system performance tuning and system engineering. 30 years old, I came to Japan in 2010 to realize my dream of living abroad. From there, I attended Japanese language school and technical school for about 3 years. I was interested in mobile development and joined Cocone, and it has been 7 years now. Right now, I am in charge of client development for Pokecolo.

Yoon:
I worked as an engineer at a Korean game company for 3 years, and worked in systems for 5 years from 2008, and was invited by my boss at that time to join Cocone in 2014. Like Mr. Park, I’ve been with the company for 7 years. after doing client work for an e-commerce site and a service Cats Atelier ” Cats Atelier ” I’m now mainly doing client work for new projects.

Takayama:
When I was in my 20s, I was devoted to music, aiming to make my major debut. After the band broke up, I studied programming at a technical college and started working at Hange now cocone fukuoka) since I was living in Fukuoka at the time. I then moved to Tokyo to work for GREE, Inc. and worked in game development for about 3 years, but then I left the game industry and joined Money Forward. But I still wanted to be involved in games and community services, so I joined Cocone (Tokyo) in 2017, and I am now in my third year. My responsibilities are mainly front-end engineering. Specifically, I contributed to the organization of the web team and the new service “coconets” while creating web games within ” Pokecolo. Now, as the head of the Web Development Office and VPoE (Vice President of Engineering), I am also in charge of the overall development organization of Cocone.

Hybrid remote and commute work

Please tell us about your remote work system.

Park:
Prior to Corona, in 2019, the remote work program was application-based, with employees coming into work on other days. First, the development team began a trial of 4 times per month in 2018 and now the monthly limit is 12 times.

*This is a different system from the implementation of remote working by Corona, and we have put in place a system that is appropriate to the situation, such as full remote working as a Corona measure.

Please tell us about your remote work system.

Yoon:
Yes, development-only remotes were applied for and obtained by individuals starting in 2018, but after this new system was implemented, we have almost a full remote system at Corona Disaster.

Have you noticed any changes in your team since the new system was introduced? Have you noticed any changes in your team?

Yun:
During normal times (when a state of emergency has not been declared), my team uses a combination of remote and in-hours work, so we decide on days when we can all get together. For example, “Let’s come to work on Wednesdays and Thursdays, and work remotely on Mondays and Tuesdays. When I have personal matters to attend to, I share them with the team and switch to remote work. However, as a general rule, I come to work on Wednesdays and Thursdays. The reason for this is that I think it is important for everyone to get together and discuss things. I think the meaning is better conveyed when we discuss things next to each other. I feel that emotions that cannot be conveyed in words alone are conveyed better than when working remotely.

Park:
In the Pokecolo team, not only development, but also the leaders of each team come to the office on a certain day of the week. This is because it is more efficient to have everyone in the office when decisions need to be made at a meeting. In the Pokecolo team to which I belong, it is difficult for all members except the leader to come to the office on the same day because of the large number of members. Therefore, we are free to choose the days we work from home within the designated number of days to come to the office. However, as a general rule, the development team is online at a fixed time every day. Morning meetings, which have been ongoing since before the remote system, are now held daily using tools such as Google Meet. I feel that face to face communication is faster and more effective than e-mail or slack mail, and the meaning is conveyed more reliably. When I first started working remotely, I had a hard time communicating, but I gradually got used to it.

Enhanced system that is helpful from a father’s perspective as well.

From a father’s point of view, please tell us about the systems that have been good for you. And how do you use each system?

Park:
Yes, Cocone has several systems.

From a father's point of view, please tell us about the systems that have been good for you. And how do you use each system?

I have found Cocone’s childcare programs to be very helpful. Among several childcare systems, I especially took advantage of the childcare free time. This system allows me to use one hour every day of my working hours for my own childcare. When my child was 0 years old, I was able to go home early and take care of him. When my child was old enough to go to daycare, I used the time to take him or her to daycare every morning. In addition, the flex system allowed me to adjust my arrival and departure times, which reduced the stress of worrying about being late.
Now that an even more flexible system has been implemented, it is still convenient to drop off and pick up children. Since my wife also works, we can decide which of us will take care of the children and pick them up from daycare each day of the week, which is very helpful.

Yoon:
I also have the flexibility to use my childcare free time to pick up my wife in the morning and evening, coordinating with her work situation. Also, when my child is sick, I sometimes talk to the team and handle the situation remotely. They are still small, so a situation where they catch a cold is inevitable. So the remote system (a remote system that exists as a childcare system) is very helpful when I need to accompany him.

Do many people take advantage of the free time for childcare?

Do many people take advantage of the free time for childcare?

Alpine:
I think most fathers use it, not just mothers, I use it myself. If I go to work 20 days a month, I can use up to 20 hours. So when my child has a fever, for example, I can use the childcare free time to make adjustments, which is very helpful.

What kind of system would you like to see at Cocone in the future?

Takayama:
Nothing in particular, because I think the current system is wonderful. If I had to say something, I would like to see subsidies for the purchase of new devices. I would like to work on introducing this as a VPoE, because there are devices that I need to touch.

What kind of system would you like to see at Cocone in the future?

Yoon:
Recently, paid online courses with guaranteed quality have become a trend. I think it would be nice to have support for taking such courses so that there are more opportunities to come into contact with new knowledge.

Park:
I used to use the company gym, cafeteria, massage and other facilities. I would like to find a way to make it easier to use these facilities in a remote combined environment. I don’t know if this is realistic, but I would be happy if, for example, support for using the neighborhood gym or the deli meal delivery system that the deli team tried in the Corona Disaster became a regular feature.

Cocone recommended for those seeking new and flexible ways of working.

What kind of person would be a good fit for Cocone from the perspective of the work environment and corporate culture?

Takayama:
CONE is a father-friendly company that raises children. So I hope that we can be proactive in bringing in men with children. I have mostly left it to my wife….

Yoon:
At Cocone, we have an environment where you can balance and cherish your time between work and family. I think this is a great fit for those who want to work while ensuring that they can spend time with their families.

Park:
Recently, I feel that times have changed, but in a good way. I think the future will be built by people who can get used to new work styles, such as using remote work in combination, and who can go with the flow. Therefore, I think that I would be a good fit for someone who can respond flexibly in this way.
